Intro:
Corn is harvested in the fall and early winter months, and crows love it! Crows enjoy
eating the corn, which is why farmers put up scarecrows—to scare crows away! This craft
will help to teach kids about why fall is often symbolized with corn, scarecrows and crows.

Set Up Ideas:
Pour paint onto cups, plates or trays to make it easy for kids to paint them. Set up an area
for drying with butcher paper and have plenty of cleaning supplies on hand.

Let’s Get Started:
Gather the following materials: washable black paint, jumbo craft sticks, black feathers,
eyes and other decorating materials.

Tips and Tricks:
You may create a display stand by pouring dried corn kernels into a shallow box. Place the
craft stick portion of the crows into the kernels for an adorable display of your classroom
crows.

Follow up Activity:
Too many crows? Make some scarecrows! Cut construction paper into the shapes of
clothes and a hat and glue them onto a craft stick. Add a funny face and enjoy!

Crows, along with corn and the changing colors of leaves, are popular signs and
symbols of Fall. Discuss these symbols and why we associate them with fall.
The name for a group of crows is a "murder." What are other groups of animals called?

Steps:

  1. Paint jumbo craft sticks with black paint and allow them to fully dry.
  2. Once the craft sticks are dry, affix eyes and beaks to create faces for your cute crows.
  3. Add any other decorative materials desired to personalize your crows.
  4. Create a classroom display of all of the crows together by either hanging them on a line or
    by standing them up.
