An Activity for School age:
Explore flotation by creating little boats out of apples.
Before You Begin:
Cut apples in half.
Activity Goals:
Learn how seeds travel
Explore the concept of floating
Furthermore:
Ask children what they predict will happen. Will the apple sink or float? Begin a
conversation about seeds and how seeds travel from one place to another.
Steps:
- Begin by cutting out “sails” in different shapes and sizes. Use stamps to decorate them.
- Cut little slits in each sail and slide the sail over a craft stick.
- Insert the sail into the flat side of each apple.
- Fill a large, clear bin with water and place the apple boats in the water.
- See if they sink or float!
